Ear Surgery Orange County

Otoplasty, also known as Ear Reshaping, is a cosmetic surgery performed to correct abnormally protruding ears. Ideally, ears should be positioned close to the side of the head. Ears that are prominent do not look natural on adults or children and can be the cause of caustic remarks by peers – especially among school aged children. Between the ages of three to four years old, children with protruding ears begin to recognize the difference between their ears and the ears of other same-age children. It’s not uncommon for children as young as six years old to suffer psychological scarring as a result of caustic peer remarks. About 5% of Caucasian children are affected by overly prominent ears (Promin Aurus).

From the first consultation to the follow up visits, Dr. Yeh and staff exceeded all of my expectations. I had consultations with a couple other doctors, and no one welcomed or made me feel more comfortable than Dr. Yeh. He truly cares about your feelings, concerns and thoughts. Jamie B. – 9/8/11

Adults who have lived with protruding ears, all their lives, can commonly suffer low self-esteem and can be very sensitive about their appearance. So no matter what the age – young or old – negative attention caused by unnatural looking ears can be damaging.

  • Ear Reshaping surgery is safe, straight-forward & commonly performed
  • Ear Reshaping is for children at least 6 years old & healthy adults of any age
  • Ear Reshaping involves a short recovery & little down time
  • Ear Reshaping can also correct trauma/injury abnormalities

GOOD CANDIDATES:
Ear Reshaping can be performed on a child who has achieved 90% of its adult ear size. This is usually by age 7. Adults – of any age – who desire correction for protruding ears and who are in good health are good candidates. You must have realistic expectations also. Dr. Yeh is skilled and experienced in all corrective ear surgeries including those caused by traumatic injuries and congenital deformities.

YOUR CONSULTATION:
Dr. Yeh believes that the initial consultation is most important and should be done face to face with your surgeon. After listening closely and carefully to your concerns Dr. Yeh is able to do a critical evaluation and make the correct recommendations to address your specific needs. It is during the consultation that you both arrive at a mutual understanding and trust than enables Dr. Yeh to tailor the treatment plan that is best suited to you – not somebody else.

OTOPLASTY SURGERY:
Dr. Yeh normally uses general anesthesia for small children and local anesthesia combined with sedation for adults and older children. Otoplasty surgery can take 2-3 hours and varies with each patient depending upon the extensiveness and the techniques Dr. Yeh chooses to use. Incisions are made behind the ear and are well hidden. Sutures close the incisions and your head is wrapped in a dressing which is worn for about 1 week. A little discomfort or throbbing is normal and to be expected. This is easily managed with oral pain medication while it resolves over a couple of day. Dr. Yeh’s patients are able to be up and about a few hours after surgery and most return to work within 1 week. Children are able to go back to school within 7 days also – but strenuous activity – such as lifting, straining, exercise and sports are not allowed until Dr. Yeh determines you are completely healed and are safe to resume those activities.
